Section outline

  • A relational approach is a system wide approach. It emphasises the importance of relationships and connections and focuses on building strong, positive relationships among children, teachers, and the wider school community. The Virtual School has purchased membership for all Hampshire Schools and settings to the Attachment Research Community (ARC).

The Attachment Research Community (ARC) is a national charity set up in 2017 by Virtual School Headteachers, school leaders, psychologists, training organisations and academics, with a mission for ‘every school to be attachment and trauma aware’.

ARC’s purpose is to support all schools and education settings to be attachment and trauma aware in their practice for the benefit of all members of the learning community and particularly the most vulnerable, by bringing together, sharing, and celebrating best practice.

ARC in its simplest terms is a self-assessment framework to support schools to draw together all their good practice in this area and identify areas for development. See the ARC website for more details. There are many useful events, webinars and resources you can access.

Below are examples of case studies our schools have written to be on their silver pathway journey.

  •

    • Join Great Binfields Primary as they explain their journey to becoming an Attachment and Trauma Aware setting. Deputy Headteacher Michelle Holdsworth shares how recognising the increasing number of children and families in their school community who had experienced trauma and/or childhood ACEs led to the school re-examining and changing their approach to teaching and learning and behaviour and sanctions, and the implementation of relational practice across the setting. Michelle details Great Binfields' journey over the last three years and provides ideas and examples of strategies that may be useful for other settings looking to develop relational practice.

  •

    • Join Rownhams St John's CofE Primary for an insightful ARC webinar exploring how relational approaches can be meaningfully embedded across an entire school community. By transforming both their physical environment and relational approaches, the school has worked towards its goal of creating a climate of safety, belonging and emotionally informed learning for every child. In this session, Headteacher Tim Woodford and Deputy Headteacher and Inclusion Lead Helen Hannam discuss the strategies behind their approaches and how they implemented them along the way
